The Lost Joy of Letters – And Why We're Bringing It Back
In a world of swipes, pings, likes and notifications, it’s amazing how easy it is to talk to people… while truly saying so little. We text family, comment on posts, email colleagues and message acquaintances at lightning speed. But somewhere in all that digital convenience, we’ve lost a little magic.
Here at Threaded Letters, I’m on a mission to bring some of that magic back - through the simple, beautiful act of writing and sending a real letter, with a sewing touch.
Because when you sit down with pen and paper, slow your pace a little and send something physical out into the world… something changes. It becomes thoughtful. Personal. Tangible. Human.
And honestly - that’s something worth keeping alive.
Why Handwritten Letters Matter
When you write a letter by hand, a few lovely things happen:
✨ You connect with the person in a deeper, more intentional way
✨ You get a moment to slow down, breathe and step outside the rush
✨ You get to play with your favourite stationery, stickers, washi tape, stamps and envelopes… guilt-free
✨ You may even rediscover your own handwriting (or start improving it!)
There’s something grounding about sitting with paper and pen, without a single notification intruding. No tabs open. No “quick reply before the kettle boils.” Just your thoughts, your word and the person you’re writing to.
It’s a small act - but it feels big.
Who Could You Write To?
Honestly? Anyone. But here are some lovely places to begin:
Your grandparents or family
If they’ve worked out how to text you, you can absolutely return the favour with a handwritten letter every now and then.
A pen pal
Whether it’s someone who loves sewing, slow living, journaling or crafts - there’s something wonderful about connecting through the post. Threaded Letters Snail Mail Club includes a postcard each month for you to send a friend.
Friends far away
Instead of the occasional Facebook like, send a letter that says, “I’m thinking of you.”
A maker, artist or blogger you admire
Short and heartfelt mail can make someone’s whole week.
Your future self
Seal it, tuck it away, and set a reminder. Receiving a letter from yourself a year later is a strangely emotional and beautiful gift.
And if you’ve joined the Threaded Letters Snail Mail Club, you already have the perfect place to begin! Send your postcard each month to someone who would love to receive it!
A Creative Practice in an Envelope
Writing a letter is more than communication - it’s a tiny, creative ritual.
Decorating an envelope. Choosing stamps. Selecting paper. Doodling in the margins. Stitching fabric stamps, adding pretties, tucking in a surprise.
It feels playful, intentional, tactile - and a lovely way to use the beautiful supplies many of us collect.
Stationery becomes not something you’re “saving"…
but something you’re actually using and enjoying.
The Best Bit
Sending a letter is wonderful.
Receiving one is pure joy.
A mailbox with something other than a bill?
Yes please!
Let’s Bring Letters Back
So, if you’ve been thinking about starting - here’s your gentle nudge.
Pull out your notebook, your favourite pen, a snippet of fabric, a sticker sheet you’ve been saving for “someday,” and write to someone you care about.
It doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to be real.
A big thank you to all of my wonderful subscribers in my first month of my Threaded Letters Snail Mail club! November is now open until the end of the month of you would like some stitchy joy sent to your mailbox! And I have some October letters left also!
And if you want to write to me… well, I’d absolutely love to open my mailbox and open your envelope in my studio.
Happy mailing,
Jo x
