Introducing my first sewing pattern The Sassenach Skirt. A labour of love and born from a simple desire. To create something that truly fits, not just physically, but emotionally and practically through the many seasons of a woman's life.
I created this skirt after years of searching for something that could move with my body instead of working against it. Like many women, I found that my body changes through different seasons and my clothes didn't always keep up. This pattern was designed to change that, to cinch and flow with every season, much like the women who wear it.
The Sassenach Skirt is intended to be worn across everyday life, dressed up or down, layered through seasons, and reached for again and again. It is a piece designed for comfort without sacrificing beauty, equally suited to slow days at home or out in the world.
At the heart of the design is an adjustable flat waistband, allowing the skirt to expand and contract with the body. The intended fit is flexible rather than fixed, a flowy subtle A-line style with ease built into the adjustable construction. This allows the skirt to be worn more fitted or more relaxed depending on your preference and your needs on any given day. And of course it has pockets!
With comfort and adaptability at its core, this skirt can also be a gentle, considered option for those who live with disability, chronic illness, or fluctuating needs, offering ease of wear, adjustability and freedom of movement without restriction.
This pattern was made for women in every season of womanhood, for bodies that change, for those who value comfort and for anyone who wants clothing that adapts rather than restricts. It is suitable for confident beginners learning to sew wearable garments, as well as more experienced sewists who appreciate thoughtful, functional design.
More than just a skirt, the Sassenach Skirt is an invitation to create something that fits your life, not the other way around.
The Sassenach Skirt, a subtle A-line mid length skirt that cinches at each side with 2 drawstrings sitting within a casing piece. The flat waist band and side/front ties allow a comfortable and easily adjustable fit at your waist, and it also has pockets!
SKILLS COVERED:
- a drawstring cinched casing
- drawstring ties
- waistband construction
- in seam pockets
FABRIC RECOMMENDATIONS:
For this pattern, I recommend woven cotton or linen, poplin or lawn with a moderate or fluid drape between 3 to 7 oz per yard. Stiffer or heavier fabrics with a voluminous drape can be used, but they could result in a garment that is less fluid or flowy, and it will be difficult to make into ties and use for your cinched waist casing construction. Avoid knit fabrics or fabrics with a lot of stretch.
